Paul Roos Gymnasium vs Paarl Boys’ High Historic Overview
Historic Overview Paul Roos Gymnasium vs Paarl Boys’ High
On Saturday 19 May the two rival boy schools will once again lock horns in an epic battle at Paul Roos’s famous Markotter grounds in this 6th edition of the 2018 Premier Interschool derbies. These two pillars of schoolboy rugby in the Western Cape have been neighbors, friends and rivals for 150 years. They compete against each other in all sports. The boys know each other well and many become friends during and after school where old boys play together in representative teams for provinces and South Africa over the years.
Paarl Boys’ High vs Paul Roos is one of the great derby clashes between two schools that have dominated Western Province schools’ rugby for many years. Together with Paarl Gym they have produced more than 75% of all Western Province Craven Week players since 1964.
This year the maroon boys are out for revenge as it has been three years since they last tasted victory against the hooped jerseys of Paarl Boys’ and would like to return the favor of beating the school from Paarl in their 150th year celebration. Traditionally the derbies go the way of the home team by the smallest of margins. Exceptions to the rule are in the 70’s when Paarl Boys’ High won 10 in a row and in the late 80’s and early 90’s when Paul Roos won 4 on the trot.
Since then the matches have been very close and evenly spread, until Paarl Boys’ High’s expected victory in 2012 over Paul Roos on their beloved Markotter field. Paul Roos nearly returned the favor in 2013 only for Paarl Boys’ High to snatch victory at the death with a try to win the game 20-19. Paul Roos’s last win over their rivals came in 2014 when in turn snatched a win right at the end with a try to make sure they win 17-13. Since then it has been all in favor of Paarl Boys’ High who have been unbeaten for 3 years in local schoolboy rugby.

The boys from Stellenbosch are having a stellar season so far and look unstoppable. They have amassed close to 600 points already in only 9 games with less than a 100 scored against them. They have demolished good teams like SACS and Grey High and beat Paarl Gymnasium at their impenetrable Jan Kriel Fort in Paarl.
They have a very solid pack of forwards lead by captain and hooker JJ Kotze. Strongman Mink Sharink locks the pack and together with roaming 8th man Matthew Cordy they have a balance between brute strength and skillful ball carriers that can make for a very long day on a rugby field. Their backs are fast and slick and with pivot Juan Mostert pulling the strings, they operate like a well-tuned engine. Wingers Remy Engelbrecht and Tiaan Pretorius forms an exciting back three with fullback Kade Wolhuter and together with old hand Regan vd Westhuizen at centre, they will be a handful to contain on Markotter come Saturday.

2018/05/05 | Grey College | Lose | 20 | 34 |
Having gone unbeaten for three seasons and in more than 50 games, the 2018 team got a rude awakening early on in their season when the visiting Jaguares team from Argentina beat them at their 150 Year Festival. They bounced back well and won the next 5 games on the trot against tough local opposition like Outeniqua and Affies. Then Grey College from Bloemfontein came down to Paarl on 5th May and the proud record took a tumble when Grey became the first South African schoolboy team to beat Paarl Boys since 30 August 2014. Indeed, an excellent record that will be very hard to break in modern day schoolboy rugby and one that Paarl Boys’ can truly be proud of.
The 2018 team is captained by SA Schools lock Adrian Alberts who truly leads from the front and is an inspiration to all his team mates. The Blue Train, as the team is affectionately known to its supporters, again boast a solid pack of forwards as is to be expected from a Paarl Boys’ team. They have the likes of 2016 Grant Khomo flyhalf Kian Meadon to direct the backs and flight footed Riis du Plessis, youngest son of Carel du Plessis, at fullback who loves to run the ball from everywhere on the field. The 2018 Paarl Boys’ team is not to be taken to lightly and any opposition that is going to underestimate them will be in for a rude awakening.

Rugby at Paarl Boys High
Rugby is an integral part of the Paarl Boys’ way of life. It is important to win, but that should not be the primary objective. A sportsman may never be abused to ensure the success of a team. The primary objective at Paarl Boys’ High must be one of enjoyment, for both player and coach. Whereas they agree with the legendary Vince Lombardi when he said: ‘’Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing’’ they hold winning to be more than just points on the board. Winning relates to the values, commitment and the pursuit of the best of one’s abilities.
PBHS has produced 20 players that have represented South Africa since 1906 of which 18 have been capped for tests. They have provided some of the legends and most famous Springbok rugby players ever to have played in the Green and Gold. Players like Oom “Boy” and Fanie Louw, Piet “Spiere” du Toit, Mannetjies Roux, Ryk van Schoor, Carel Du Plessis and Corné Krige.
