PAUL ROOS GIMNASIUM vs GREY HIGH SCHOOL – Background Info

PAUL ROOS GIMNASIUM vs GREY HIGH SCHOOL

On the 12th of April 2014 two schools rich in rugby tradition will once again meet in their annual Derby. Grey High from Port Elizabeth is currently in the driving seat, having won the last two encounters 23-18 in 2013 and 23-19 in 2012. Paul Roos last won in 2011 with a score of 22-18 away from home. It seems these two schools are very fond of these numbers! Two current WP and Stormers teammates played against each other in the corresponding match in 2009 when Paul Roos won 20-13 in a very entertaining match. Siya Kolisi played flank for Grey PE that day on Phillip Field, while 17 year old Steven Kitshoff, still in Gr 11, packed down at prop for Paul Roos. Siya went on to become Grey’s latest Springbok in 2013. The green and gold jersey is destined for Steven as well.

Two current Springboks who also played against each other in this school derby is Paul Roos’ Willie Le Roux and Grey’s JJ Engelbrecht in the 2007 version.

2014 Season

This early in the season and with only a couple of games played it is very hard to predict who will carry the day. Paul Roos looks like a very slick outfit and with Coach Hein Kriek together with Brendan Venter assisting, expect this 2014 version to play a very intelligent and total brand of rugby. With a very good pack and backs, they can adapt and play according to what the circumstance needs. Keep a lookout for Fortuin and Jantjies, two pivotal players who are both in their second year of 1st XV rugby.

Grey High has been building steadily over the last few years and has produced some excellent teams in the past too, but the 2014 version could be a special one. Be on the lookout for returning Cravenweek players such as Johann van Niekerk, Keanu Vers, Jeremy Ward and Dylan Vermaak. Pivot Curwin Bosch is a youngster that has great potential. He already represented EP in the 2013 Grant Khomo and was picked for the SA u/18’s seven squad.

Paul Roos Gymnasium profile

On 29 January 1864 the Rev. J.H. Neethling of the Stellenbosch Dutch Reformed Church wrote to Dr. Langham Dale, Superintendent General of Education of the Cape:

“As a piece of news that will interest you, I may state that yesterday (28 January 1864) 30 inhabitants of this district have decided to erect a gymnasium or Latin School. They have guaranteed 465 pounds (R930) per annum, chosen a Board of Directors of five persons to carry out the resolutions with all possible speed and decided that as soon as possible a preparatory school or infant department shall be established.”

The school has been renamed three times, Stellenbosch Boys High and Victoria College after the Queen. And in 1940, it was renamed after Paul Roos, a former captain of the Springbok rugby union team. Roos was a former pupil and teacher at Paul Roos Gymnasium, and was the school’s rector from 1910 to 1940.

GREY HIGH SCHOOL– PROFILE

The school was founded by John Paterson, and named after Sir George Edward Grey, Governor of Cape Colony for the period 5 December 1854 to 15 August 1861. The motto of Grey High School is Tria Juncta in Uno meaning ‘three joined in one — mind, body and spirit’, from the Most Honorable Order of the Bath, of which Sir George Grey was created a Knight Commander in 1848.

Soon after the landing of the British Settlers in 1820, a small but flourishing settlement existed on the shores of Algoa Bay. Any form of organized education, however, was sadly lacking until the arrival of a Scottish graduate named John Paterson, who must be given most of the credit for establishing a small state-aided school in Chapel Street shortly after his arrival in 1839. He got Sir George Grey interested, and Sir George, being the Governor of the Cape Colony, made land available for endowment and set up a Board of Enquiry in 1855.

John Paterson was a remarkably active man. In addition to his own business interests, he became a Member of Parliament and was responsible for the establishment of the Standard Bank of South Africa. His big effort in getting Sir George Grey to take an interest in education led to the growth of the school to which Sir George gave his name, and the first headmaster was a Mr J. R. Macleish.
