Monument Profile
Monument High School was established in
January 1921. The monument in question is the Paardeberg Monument on
Krugersdorp, built to commemorate the decision of the South African Republic in
1880 to resist Britain’s decision to annex their country. Krugersdorp, west of
Johannesburg, is named after President Paul Kruger and was founded in 1887 by
Abner Cohen and others. The schools motto is ‘It’s better to wear out than to
rust’.
Rugby at Monnas
When the
school opened in 1921 ML Brink held a meeting of boys to find out what games
they wanted to play. They all opted for soccer, as was the custom on the bare
fields of the Highveld at the time, and he then democratically decided that
they would play rugby! The school played its first match on 1 April 1921 and
drew 3-3 with Krugersdorp High School.
Since then
the school has had many great sides, as in 1924, 1953, 1979, 1980, 1984 and
1993, when the team scored 143 tries in 28 matches.
Monument
first won the Administrator’s Cup in 1953. It won again in 1973 and then again
in 1992 and for the seven years which followed. In 2003 they were Media 24
National Schools champions. These are all huge achievements given the number
and quality of the competing schools.
After
Brink, famous coaches have been Jan Lange (1936-53), Pa Pelser, the famous
Transvaal loose forward and coach, and Hans Coetzee who still has a finger in
many of rugby’s pies.
In 1993
the 1st XV toured France and Britain and went unbeaten.
Monnas has
by far the largest representation of any school north of the Vaal River at
Craven Week and in SA Schools.
Chip of the Old Block
One of the Monnas flankers in the 2012
squad is the son of a famous Transvaal hard man during the 80’s and early 90’s.
Ian MacDonald terrorised opposition flyhalves and scrumhalves in his era and
the tear-away flanker became a Springbok in 1992 after South Africa’s
re-admission into the sporting world. His son Ruan, follows in his footsteps
and also plays the same type of role for the Monnas 1st team.

Waterkloof Profile
The year 2012 sees this relatively young school on the outskirts of Pretoria’s eastern suburbs celebrate its 33rd year of existence. In this short period, Hoërskool Waterkloof has become synonymous with excellence in education – a force to be reckoned with in all fields of secondary education: academics, sport and culture.
Hoërskool Waterkloof is an Afrikaans high school situated in the Eastern suburbs of Pretoria. It had grown to become the largest Afrikaans school in the world by 2004, with 2,200 pupils and 140 teachers. It is also one of the top schools in Pretoria and has been awarded school of the year for two years running. It has had a 100% pass rate for the 19th time. Waterkloof is one of the most prestigious schools in South Africa.
The school opened on 9 January 1979, with 12 teachers and 215 pupils. The original school buildings were completed in August, 1979. The school motto, ‘Ons bou in geloof’ (We build/grow in faith), was formally accepted on 2 July, 1979.
One of the novel innovations of the school is the Sports Bureau, which co-ordinates
all sporting activities. Modern sports facilities and several national and
provincial coaches ensure that learners enjoy excellent coaching in a variety
of sports. Professional services, such
as a physiotherapist, sport scientist and biokineticists who specialise in
sports therapy, are situated on the premises.
Hoërskool Waterkloof boasts the following rugby achievements:
·
4 Springboks: Wikus van Heerden, Gary Botha, Danie van Schalkwyk en Barend Pieterse.
·
Currently two players in the SA squad: Rohan Janse van Rensburg and Justin Phillips.
·
113 Cravenweek rugby players of whom five were chosen as captains,
·
The school boasts with 32 SA Schools players.
·
Waterkloof’s flyhalf Kobus Marais is the top points scorer in the country.
·
Outside center Rohan Janse van Rensburg is the top try scorer in the country.
·
Springbok Rugby legend Naas Botha joined the Waterkloof coaching staff in 2012
