The Rugby Football Union and England Men’s captain Chris Robshaw yesterday launched a campaign of support for the team and Prince Harry, in his role as the Vice Patron of the RFU, was keen to also get involved. Prince Harry has recorded a message for the England Women’s team saying: “Today I’m calling on you to get behind the team. While we can’t all be there at the tournament to cheer them on in person we want to send as many good luck messages as we can to let them know we’re right behind them. Come on England.” England Women’s Captain, Katy Mclean, said of Prince Harry’s involvement: “It is incredible to know that Prince Harry will be backing us as we head into the Rugby World Cup. It’s given all the girls in the squad a massive lift and we hope it will encourage lots more people to take an interest in women’s rugby and follow our progress in Paris.” The RFU is encouraging the country to come together as a show of support for women’s sport and rugby in England. Fans are being asked to show the team that the nation is behind them by tweeting their messages of support to @EnglandRugby using the hashtag #CarryThemHome in the lead up to the tournament, which takes place fromAugust 1-17. In addition to Prince Harry’s message of support, sports fans from across the worlds of politics, celebrity and sport have already pledged their support to the team and the RFU will be publically unveiling these high profile messages of support in the coming weeks. The RFU hope these pledges will give rise to a wave of patriotism that will carry England Women to success in Paris. In conjunction with the campaign launch, the RFU has released a unique promotional film starring Chris Robshaw and members of the England Women’s team. The film showcases the technique and speed of England Women as well as the unity between the England Men and Women’s squads. England will play Samoa on August 1, Spain on August 5 and Canada on August 9 at Marcoussis in Paris. The semi-finals and final take place on August 13 and 17 at the Stade Jean Bouin. |
