Pumas see off Blue Bulls at Northern Sub-Union Tournament
THE Pumas caused an upset on the first day of SARU’s EBJ Northern Sub-Union tournament being held at Profert Olën Park in Potchefstroom when they defeated the Blue Bulls 20-17 in the opening match of the week-long event on Monday.
The Mpumalanga side will be joined in the Premier competition semi-finals on Wednesday by the Golden Lions, Griffons and hosts the Leopards.
The Lions beat the Valke 39-15, the Griffons ran out 33-15 winners over Mpumalanga’s other team, Lowveld, while the Leopards made their home-ground advantage count with a 29-22 victory over Blue Bulls Limpopo.
The Blue Bulls will face their Limpopo compatriots in Wednesday’s first plate semi-final (10h00), while the Valke will play Lowveld in the second match (12h00).
The Pumas will play the Leopards in the first Premier semi-final, kicking off at 14h00, after which the Golden Lions and Griffons will contest the final match of the day at 16h00.
The tournament, which is open to all uncontracted players registered to non-premier league clubs, finishes on Friday, with all eight teams being involved in a final round of matches.
Eight teams will also contest SARU’s Southern Sub-Union tournament, due to be hosted by Boland in September.
