QANTAS WALLABIES 2018 RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP DOMESTIC FIXTURES CONFIRMED
Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast will play host to Qantas Wallabies home fixtures in the 2018 edition of The Rugby Championship, it was announced today.
After a second-place finish in 2017, the Qantas Wallabies will be out to go one better in 2018 when they renew their rivalries with New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina in the quad-nations series.
Continuing the trend of recent years, Michael Cheika’s men will kick off their 2018 campaign with the opening Bledisloe Cup showdown against New Zealand at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Saturday 18 August.
The Wallabies will then return to the scene of their memorable victory over the All Blacks this season when they welcome South Africa to Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane on Saturday 8 September.
Finally, international Rugby will return to the Gold Coast for the first time since 2014 when the Wallabies host Argentina at Cbus Super Stadium to complete back-to-back Tests on Queensland soil on Saturday 15 September.
Rugby Australia CEO Bill Pulver said: “The Rugby Championship continues to grow in its stature as the toughest international series in the world and once again Australian Rugby fans have three huge home Tests on their plate in 2018.
“Our experienced leaders and a number of emerging stars stood up for the Wallabies in 2017, leading the team on an undefeated run on the final four matches of the series.
“At the end of the Rugby Championship, the final Bledisloe Cup Test was a memorable one last season, not only for the result, but because of the historic occasion of the Wallabies becoming the first national team to play in an Indigenous jersey.
“I’m sure that late run in The Rugby Championship and the final Bledisloe Cup match has created plenty of anticipation for Wallabies fans ahead of the 2018 season and we are looking forward to seeing plenty of them out in gold, getting loud and proud at our Rugby Championship matches in Sydney and Queensland.”
Tourism and Events Queensland Chief Executive Officer Leanne Coddington said Queenslanders would be excited to welcome the Wallabies back to Queensland in 2018: “The Wallabies have a loyal following and we look forward to hosting tens of thousands of fans from around the world at Suncorp Stadium and Cbus Super Stadium in September,” Ms Coddington said.
“I’m sure Gold Coast tourism businesses will be particularly thrilled to welcome the game back to their home turf for the first time in four years.
“Tourism in Brisbane, Gold Coast and the south-east corner are set to benefit from the flow-on effects of these two major sporting events.
“The Wallabies matches form part of a blockbuster line-up of events staged in Queensland as part of the 2018 It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar, spearheaded by the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in April.”
