Qantas Wallabies to begin 2015 season with Camp at Sunshine Coast Stadium
In one of the biggest years in Australian Rugby history, the Qantas Wallabies will begin their preparations in a camp from July 5-11 on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, enhancing its reputation as the Coast’s premier venue for sport, recreation and events.
Before heading to Brisbane to play the Springboks in the first round of The Rugby Championship, the Wallabies will call Sunshine Coast home, training out of Sunshine Coast Stadium.
In preparation for his first home test as Qantas Wallabies Head Coach, Michael Cheika said the squad would benefit from the first class facility and local support.
“Although the squad has met throughout the Super Rugby season, this will be the first official training camp and a very important step towards England.
“We want to put the Wallabies in touch with our fans all over the country and this is a great chance for us to be in a great part of Australia, as well as train and prepare out of a first class sporting facility at Sunshine Coast Stadium.”
Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said it was a great honour for the Wallabies to choose the Sunshine Coast Stadium as its base for the first camp of the Championship.
“There is no doubt they will enjoy the outstanding facilities the Stadium has to offer and the relaxed atmosphere and idyllic surroundings of the region,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“While focusing on their preparation, the Wallabies will also be able to get involved within the Sunshine Coast community and share their knowledge and skills with their fans and other aspiring athletes.
“Having a sporting team of this calibre certainly positions the region as Australia’s premier regional major events destination.”
The Wallabies will hold an open training session at Sunshine Coast Stadium followed by a community coaching clinic for selected Sunshine Coast Rugby Union players. Following these sessions, the team will be available for signing autographs to the public.
The Wallabies will do battle with the Springboks in the Mandela Cup on July 18 at Suncorp Stadium, with tickets on sale to the general public on Thursday 11 June at 9:00am.
The Rugby Championship Test between the Wallabies and Springboks in Brisbane is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland as part of the state’s It’s Live! in Queensland events calendar.
