Reds support St.George Foundation with charity match against Crusaders
The St.George Queensland Reds today announced its final pre-season match against the Crusaders at Ballymore Stadium will be a charity match, in support of the St.George Foundation.
With one of the oldest rivalries in Super Rugby, hallmarked by the epic final between the two teams in 2011, the Reds and Crusaders will meet at Ballymore this Friday night in their final match before the Asteron Life Super Rugby season kicks off.
The Reds will wear a specially-designed St.George Foundation jersey for the match, shedding light on the bank’s charitable organisation, which was founded in 1990 to help build a secure future for disadvantaged children.
As part of its commitment to that cause, the St.George Foundation today announced it would donate $50,000 to Brisbane-based charity GingerCloud – which in 2014 worked with Queensland Rugby and Brothers Rugby Union Club to start the Modified Rugby Program (MRP).
“The Modified Rugby Program is all about helping families like ours belong and now we belong in rugby,” GingerCloud Founding Director Megan Elliott said.
“With the generous grant from St.George Foundation and the ongoing support of Queensland Rugby, many more families with children who learn and perceive differently will be able to be part of the truly inspiring Rugby community.”
The program is a new modified form of Rugby, developed to encourage both boys and girls with learning and perceptual difficulties to play Rugby at their local clubs. It started with one club, Brothers, in 2014 and will expand to four clubs across Brisbane in 2015.
The MRP has been endorsed by Queensland Rugby and the Australian Rugby Union to be played as an additional division of junior rugby.
Since its inception, the St.George Foundation has invested over $23-million in funding programs that enrich the lives of Australian children who are physically, socially or economically disadvantaged.
“We are delighted to be a part of the charity match and are very grateful for the ongoing support shown to us by the Reds, who will proudly take to the field with the St.George Foundation logo on their chests,” Head of St. George Foundation Leona Fell said.
The Foundation will make the donation official during half time at this Friday’s match, with St.George Bank’s Head of Queensland Retail Ross Gillam handing over a cheque to GingerCloud founding directors Megan and Anthony Elliott.
“St.George Foundation believes that kids of all abilities should be able to play sport – and the $50,000 donation will mean GingerCloud can expand their highly successful Modified Rugby Program out to more clubs across Queensland”.
Funds raised at the pre-season match will be donated back out to charities just like GingerCloud through the St.George Foundation’s three funding rounds per year.
The Reds host the Crusaders at Ballymore this Friday, 6 February, at 7:30pm AEST. Tickets are available at redsrugby.com.au. Those outside of Brisbane unable to attend the match can watch it live at redsrugby.com.au.
