The weekend of 13, 15 and 17 April 2017 has definitely been one for the books at Krugersdorp High School as one of the most successful sporting weekends that the school has showcased over the years. With 20 rugby sides and 12 hockey sides being a part of the event, there was no shortage of superb results that took place. For the first time in the history of the festival 4 Zimbabwean schools participated in the event of which two hockey sides were involved – this adding a new vibrancy to the hockey fixtures. The rugby game of the tournament had to have been the final game of the festival between Hillcrest College and hosts, Krugersdorp High School which ended in a draw, 26-26. Hillcrest College in fact also won the Espirit de Corp Trophy for Rugby as they showed excellence both on and off the field. Generally, the standard of hockey was very competitive at the festival, the most competitive it has been to date. The game between Potch Gimnasium and Krugersdorp High School was a superb showcase of hockey. Even though the game ended in a draw, 2-2, a phenomenal showcase of skills was exhibited by both sides in a tough tussle of hockey. Potch Gimmies was involved in a superb match against H/S Pietersburg on Monday, 17 April. The game could have gone either way – Pietersburg ended up the victors by winning 1-0. The Espirit de Corp trophy for hockey went to the Zimbabwean touring side, Prince Edward. The boys from the side entertained the crowds with great hockey and an even better spirit over the 3 days. The overall feedback from the event has been overwhelming as the teams involved as well as the spectators had a fantastic time at the festival. No doubt this event, will continue to grow from strength to strength and will continue to bring in evenly balanced competition throughout Southern Africa.
