England’s Megan Ellery came through the Sevens Open Trials process

Following the success of previous England Women Open Sevens Trials, the Rugby Football Union will host open trials again this year, on May 3, in a bid to unearth some more rugby talent.

12 months ago, nearly 100 players attended the open trials and one player, Megan Ellery, has proved to be a star in the making as she has since gone on to compete on the IRB Sevens World Series circuit for England in Dubai and China. Other capped England Sevens players, who also previously impressed at the Sevens Open Trials, include Sally Tuson and Ruth Laybourn.

With Rugby Sevens now on the Olympic agenda, with the sport set to make its debut in 2016 at the Rio de Janeiro Games, Sevens really is going from strength to strength.

The England Sevens trials will be held Broadstreet RFC and the trials are completely OPEN to any female over the age of 18-years-old. You don’t need a huge amount of Sevens experience, but you must be able to secure a shuttle time of 650 m+ and sprint 40 metres in less than six seconds.

Nicola Ponsford, the RFU’s Head of Performance (Women), said: “We know there are players outside of our current system with huge amounts of talent who we’ve never seen before. Many of these players may only just have started playing at University or College for example but have the potential to become fantastic players. We really want anyone who has a great level of fitness and ball skills to come along and show us how good they are.”
