Rondebosch Boys’ High came out on top against their old rivals Diocesan College by 32-19 in their annual clash at Piley Rees on Saturday. Rondebosch won the match thanks to a second half surge which saw them scored 17 unanswered points after the break.

Diocesan College, or Bishops as they are more commonly known as, the last victory against Rondebosch was back in 2015 on their home ground, Piley Rees. Bishops will have to wait until the last Saturday of the schoolboy rugby season on 26 August for another shot to bag their 99th victory against Rondebosch Boys’ High.

Rondebosch had the upper hand in the last four matches between the two schools. Saturday’s clash was the 192nd between them with the latest being Rondebosch’s 76th victory in their first clash in 1908.

Bishops started the match well with the captain and outside center, Rob MacDonald, scoring a brace and his midfield partner, George Spencer, also crossing the line. Fullback, James Ipser, added the extras with the boot. Bishops led 19-15 at the break.

Rondebosch Boys’ High’s burly eight men, Cal Smid, as well as winger Ross Roode also scored a brace of tries in the match. Flyhalf, Robbie Davis, forgot his kicking boots at home and only manage to convert one of his side’s six tries.

Bishops held the lead for the first 60 minutes of the match before Rondebosch grabbed the opportunity to secure a 32-19 victory.

The first match between the two schools in 1908 saw Bishops running rampant on that day winning the encounter 112-0 with Painton Cowen scoring 86 points in the match.
