Rugby player dies in tragic accident
The South African Rugby Union (SARU) was shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the death of Leopards Under-19 player, Kwena Moremi, in a swimming accident in East London on Friday.
The loosehead prop was with his team-mates undertaking a “flush-out” session in the sea following the Leopards’ 19-16 win over Border. Moremi and others were reportedly caught in a rip tide in which he was drowned. He was 18.
“What words can adequately describe a tragedy such as this?” said Mr Oregan Hoskins, president of the South African Rugby Union.
“One can only feel deeply for his family, friends and his team-mates at the Leopards for this awful loss of a young life so full of promise. This is a shocking tragedy.”
Kwena Moremi was born in Kempton Park and attended the Rhodesfield High School from where he played Under-16 Grant Khomo Week rugby in two successive seasons. He matriculated from Louis Botha THS and represented Free State at the 2011 Coca-Cola Craven Week before joining the Leopards.
