The Golden Lions Rugby Union will bid farewell to coach Russell Winter who has signed a contract to coach the forwards at Western Province as of November 2015.

Winter is severing his ties with the Golden Lions after an association with the Union that spanned 21 years, twelve as player and seven years in a coaching position.

Winter coached the Unions Under 21s and Vodacom Cup sides for the past five seasons.

The former Jeppe learner first donned the Red and White hoop of the then Transvaal Craven Week team in ’94 and he represented the Under 21’s which he has coached for the past three season in 95 and ’96.

Winter went on to captain the Lions at Vodacom Cup and Currie Cup levels and skippered the Cats for a season before playing for the Sharks for a single season.

He only enjoyed a two year break after retiring in 2006 before being appointed as the assistant coach for the Vodacom Cup side and he was promoted to head coach for the last three years.

*Winter has been appointed as Eddie Jones’ forward assistant at the Stormers and the Lions wish one of their sons all the best with his new venture.
