Early morning traffic in Sandton was light-heartedly disrupted on Monday morning when a group of Springbok rugby players took to the streets to serve hot cups of coffee to women as part of a #LoveRugby Women’s Day surprise.

International Women’s day is celebrated on Tuesday, 9 August.

Springboks Oupa Mohoje, Damian de Allende, Rudy Paige, Bongi Mbonambi and Lwazi Mvovo were joined by Springbok Sevens stars Ruhan Nel and Carel du Preez as they brought many vehicles to standstill to hand coffee to women drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

The group held up placards which read “Hoot if you #LoveRugby” and proceeded to hand out delicious cups of coffee in #LoveRugby themed paper cups to women on the streets in the busy  Sandton business hub.

The latest #LoveRugby activity was a roaring success and the group handed out more than 200 cups of coffee and chocolates to women.

Mohoje said he and his Bok team mates had great fun during the hour-long fun ‘shift’: “I didn’t know what to expect when we walked out into the street with trays full of coffee and chocolates. The women were sceptical at first, but we quickly managed to convince them about our genuine token of appreciation. Women are the bedrock of any society. It was also nice to join up with the Sevens players, and we had great fun out there,” said Mohoje.

The Springbok squad are currently in Johannesburg to prepare for their first Castle Lager Rugby Championship match against Argentina in Nelspruit on 20 August.
