SA Select ready for action in Dubai
SA Select Women’s Sevens coach Renfred Dazel said on Tuesday his team was raring to go as the countdown continues to the season-opening Emirates Airlines Dubai Rugby Sevens on Thursday and Friday at 7the Sevens Stadium.
The SA Select team will meet the Canada Maple Leafs in their opening match at 07h00 on Thursday, which will be followed by matches against the Belgium Rugby Sevens and the Tabusoro Angels International in the pool stages of the tournament.
The knock-out rounds of the international invitational tournament will take place on Friday.
“We have been preparing for this tournament for the past month and one can sense the excitement among the players to take to the field,” said Dazel. “We ended the 2014 season on a high note by winning the Rugby Africa Women’s Sevens Olympic Qualifier in September and we would like to build on that form going into this tournament.
“That said, we will be facing tough competition in Dubai and it is important that we deliver strong performances from the outset in order to achieve our objective of advancing to the Cup final.”
The SA Select team arrived in the desert city of Dubai on Monday and have been fine-tuning their preparations for the tournament since.
“The tempo and intensity of the training sessions has been high and the players have been focused, which is exactly what I would like to see in our matches,” said Dazel “.
“It has also been encouraging to see how well the new players have slotted in. Chané Stadler, Lamla Momoti and Nomsa Mokwai joined the squad last week and all of them are comfortable with the structures, so I am looking forward to seeing them in action.”
The SA Select team last featured in the Dubai Rugby Sevens in 2013, where the side went down 36-12 against the Kazakhstan Almaty in the Cup Final.
