SA Select to face Wales in Cup Quarterfinal in Dubai
The SA Select Women’s Sevens team on Thursday defeated the Tabusoro Angels International and Belgium Rugby Sevens convincingly at the Emirates Airlines Dubai Rugby Sevens Invitational to book their place in the Cup Quarterfinal against Wales on Friday.
The team faltered in their opening match of the tournament against the Canada Maple Leafs as they suffered a disappointing 19-7 defeat.
But they bounced back with a strong performance against the Tabusoro Angels International as they regained their confidence on attack and delivered a solid defensive display for a convincing 28-0 victory.
This bolstered their confidence immensely for their final pool match against the Belgium Rugby Sevens, and the team wasted no time picking up where they left off to deliver another fine performance. Such was their dominance on attack they scored 40 points, while they shut out Belgium to deny them from scoring a single point.
Coach Renfred Dazel’s team will face the Wales Women’s National, who also won two of their three pool matches, in the Cup Quarter-final.
Wales registered a 33-10 victory against Pretoria’s Tuks Ladies Sevens and then defeated the West Coast Vikings Ladies 27-0 before going down 38-7 against the France Development Women.
The Quarter-final will begin at 06h40 on Friday.
