SANDF Rugby Week underway in Potchefstroom
The South African National Defence Force Rugby Week 2014 returned to Potchefstroom this year after an absence of eight years and kicked off at the Johann du Randt Rugby Stadium at the Army Support Base on Monday.
Matches on the opening day saw strong starts for Gauteng and Free State in the Senior League, whilst Western Province impressed with a good win in the President’s League.
In the Women’s League, Western Province and Western Cape started with good wins.
Matches will also be played on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the final matches and main match to be played on Friday, 4 July.
Coaching clinics will take place on Thursday amongst the communities of Orkney and Klerksdorp. This has been arranged in cooperation with the Leopards Rugby Union.
Teams are competing in three leagues, a Senior, President’s and Women’s League.
The Senior League consists of Free State (FS), South Eastern Cape (SEC), West Coast (WC), Gauteng (GT), Western Province (WP) and North West (NW).
WP, KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), SEC, Northern Cape (NC) and GT face each other in the President’s League and a team each from WC, FS, WP and NC will compete in the Women’s League.
Monday’s results:
Senior League: Gauteng 29 North West 3; Free State 27 Western Cape 10
President’s League: Western Province 34 South Eastern Cape 14
Women’s League: Western Province 21 Free State 15; Western Cape 29 Northern Cape 0
