SARU moves to accredit player agents
The South African Rugby Union (SARU) has announced the names of 40 player agents, who have been accredited for 2011 by the Union under a new regulatory system. The registration system is designed to help players, provincial unions and agents ensure that professional standards are observed at all times.
“Players may only be represented by an agent who has been accredited by SARU, while provincial unions may only deal or negotiate with those agents,” said Christo Ferreira, SARU’s Manager of Legal Affairs.
“We’ve gone through a long and rigorous process to reach this point and finalise the list of accredited player agents in conjunction with the South African Rugby Players’ Association (SARPA) and the South African Rugby Employers’ Organisation (SAREO).”
Ferreira said that the system had been introduced firstly with player welfare in mind and also to ensure provinces dealt only with competent professionals.
“Anyone was able to represent players in negotiations with provincial unions before, which led to problems for all parties,” said Ferreira. “Now, both players and unions, have the security of knowing that an agent on our list has been vetted and completed a registration process to establish his competency.”
Applicants are scrutinised by the Player Agent Board and pay an application fee. Approved applicants then sit an examination after which are they accredited, should they pass the test.
“The test requires a sound knowledge of the applicable regulations and they need to obtain 80% to pass the exam,” said Ferreira. “In addition, player agents are subject to an ethics code and can be removed if they are found guilty by a judicial committee of breaching the regulations.”
