Sharks Club XV win Central Amateur Provincial Competition
The Sharks Club XV on Friday secured the Central Amateur Provincial title in style as they beat Free State Central 47-14 in the Cup Final at Griqua Park in Kimberley.
Their counterparts, the KwaZulu-Natal Wildebeest Rural, meanwhile, won the Plate Final with a 45-12 victory against Griffons Rural to cap off a memorable day for the Union.
Griffons Central finished the competition in third position as they defeated hosts Griquas Central 41-14, while Griquas Rural pipped Free State Rural 29-27 to finish in Seventh position.
The Sharks Club XV started their clash with a bang as they took a convincing 33-7 lead at the break. They built on this form in the second half and increased their try tally to seven, while they limited Free State Central to adding only one more try to their score for the 47-14 victory.
The KwaZulu-Natal Wildebeest Rural, meanwhile, overcame a tough first half against the Griffons Rural in the Plate Final as they took an 18-7 halftime lead. But they found their rhythm in the second half and made good use of their try-scoring chances to finish the match with six tries to only two by Griffons Rural for their 45-12 victory.
In the third and fourth-place playoff, Griffons Central and Griquas Central were involved in a tight first half as they both gave everything on attack and defence. Griffons Central took a narrow 12-7 lead at the break, but they dominated the second half completely, which allowed them to emerge 41-14 victors.
The seventh and eighth-place playoff was a tight tussle from start to end. Such was the closeness of the clash, hosts Griquas Rural, found themselves only 7-3 ahead of Free State Rural at the break. The teams both used their opportunities well in the second half and showed their fighting spirit, but Griquas Rural edged the Bloemfontein side 29-27.
