Smith cuts down on Sevens commitment
Kwagga Smith will only be available for four tournaments in the next World Sevens series to focus more time on 15-man rugby.
Smith’s contract stipulates that he must be available for 15-man rugby at the Lions next season and has already had his first training session with them in preparation for Saturday’s Currie Cup clash with the Blue Bulls.
If he plays well in the Currie Cup Smith could be a big player for the Lions in next year’s Super Rugby campaign and could finish up his Sevens commitments by the end of February.
With a shortage of quality openside flankers in South Africa Smith’s decision to put a greater focus on 15-man rugby would give him a better chance of knocking on the Springbok door.
Winger Seabelo Senatla has a similar arrangement with the Stormers whereby he will also just be available for four tournaments during the World Sevens series.
