Sonny Bill Williams ruled out of Canada Sevens
Sonny Bill Williams is returning to New Zealand after a leg injury ruled him out of contention for next weekend’s Canada Sevens in Vancouver.
He has been replaced by Teddy Stanaway (Bay of Plenty) who debuted for the All Blacks Sevens at the Cape Town Sevens in December.
Coach Gordon Tietjens said Williams had been carrying a minor leg injury which had flared up on Saturday morning and it was therefore prudent for the Rugby World Cup winning All Black to return home.
“We were not prepared to risk Sonny in Vancouver especially as we’re again playing on artificial turf which could have worked against him.
“We therefore thought it was best he return home and get the right treatment and support he needs to speed his recovery.”
Tietjens said Williams would be available for selection for the Singapore Sevens and Hong Kong Sevens in April.
