Springbok Sevens' off to good start at IRB Edinburgh Sevens
Ryno Benjamin scored a hat-trick in South Africa’s 49-5 win over Italy in the first match of the IRB Edinburgh Sevens on Saturday.
Murrayfield represents the Springbok Sevens’ final opportunity to win an IRB Sevens World Series event this season, after they were crowned champions last year.
Benjamin opened the scoring in the third minute, but the Italians answered two minutes later through Emanuele Leonardi.
Cecil Afrika scored South Africa’s second, putting them 14-5 up at half-time.
After the break, Afrika scored his second, before Chris Dry crossed a minute later. A try by veteran Fabian Juries put South Africa 35-5 ahead.
Benjamin then broke through for the final two tries to push South Africa to a final score of 49-5.
Mzwandile Stick shone with the boot, converting all seven of South African tries.
The BlitzBokke’s next two group matches are against Russia (15:07 SA time) and New Zealand (18:55).
