St.George Queensland Reds add depth to forward stocks
The Queensland Rugby Union continues to build its squad for the 2018 season with the re-signing of loose forward Caleb Timu, while also locking in Australian U20s second-row pair Angus Blyth and Harry Hockings.
Time and Blyth have signed through 2018, while Hockings will be at the club until at least 2020.
While yet to make his Super Rugby debut, Timu (23) has impressed during his appearances in Queensland Premier Rugby this year, while diligently making his way back from a knee injury. Standing at 190cm and weighing in at 122kg, he is a big, dynamic forward with plenty of potentials.
Timu joins a healthy stable of loose forwards already committed for the 2018 season, including George Smith, Scott Higginbotham, Adam Korczyk, Reece Hewat and Michael Gunn.
Blyth (19) and Hockings (18) are both products of the Queensland Rugby pathway and were members of the undefeated Queensland U20s side which claimed its second successive national title earlier this year.
The pair have also recently returned from representing Australia at the World Rugby U20s Championship in Georgia.
Blyth is also a recipient of the John Eales Rugby Excellence Scholarship at Bond University, which recognizes exceptional Rugby players with strong academic, leadership and community skills.
The Reds’ lock stocks for 2018 also include Kane Douglas, Lukhan Tui, and Izack Rodda.
Reds head coach Nick Stiles said: “It’s good to add further depth to our forward stocks for the 2018 season and beyond.
“Caleb’s got a lot of promise – he’s a big body, he moves really well and at only 23 years old we’re yet to see him realize his full potential on a Rugby field.
“We’ve been impressed with the way he’s applied himself to ensure he’s ready to make the most of his opportunities when he finally makes his debut.
“Angus and Harry are two young locks who have come through the Queensland pathway. They’ve been strong contributors to the Queensland and Australian Under-20s programs and we’re looking forward to seeing how they progress as they transition into the Reds squad.”
