Some of the greatest legends to ever don the blue jersey were in fine form at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club yesterday for the Vodacom Bulls’ Annual Golf Day, which this year was played in celebration of the Blue Bulls Rugby Union’s (BBRU) 75th Anniversary.

Just days after the former Blue Bulls, Bulls and Northern Transvaal players were honoured in a parade to mark the first ever match at Loftus Versfeld, the legends continued the Union’s 75th Anniversary celebrations by joining the current Vodacom Bulls players and coaches in a day to remember on the fairways.

Ideal weather conditions provided the perfect backdrop at one of South Africa’s most prestigious golf venues for the legends and current stars to showcase their putting and driving skills at the club’s two courses.

Loftus Versfeld’s best loved former stars such as Naas Botha, Frik Du Preez, Wynand Classen and Burger Geldenhuys participated in four balls with fellow Blue Bulls, Bulls and Northern Transvaal legends and guests on the West Course. Meanwhile Vodacom Bulls players including captain Pierre Spies, Akona Ndungane,, Chilliboy Ralepelle, Zane Kirchner, Deon Stegmann and Louis Fouche teed off on the East Course in fourballs with guests.

Congratulations to the winning four ball of the day on the East Course which consisted of Nıel Meyer, Pıerre Spıes, Rıchard van der Schyff & Rory Oosthuızen whilst Jacques Olıvıer, Jaco Badenhorst, Chrısto Brıts & Renıco Pretorıus scooped up the win on the West Course.

Vodacom Bulls captain Pierre Spies and the legendary former Northern Transvaal skipper Naas Botha said it was a superb day for all in attendance.

“It’s been an honour for the team to share our annual golf day with our legends in a year as momentous as this one. They are a great source of motivation and inspiration for us and I think that was very evident on Saturday night when we beat the Toyota Cheetahs. Their contributions, achievements and successes have laid the foundation for a wonderful Bulls legacy, which we strive to take to greater heights each and every season,” said Spies.

Botha says the Union has come a long way since its beginnings in 1938 with strong, proud and passionate traditional values that resonate with the current crop of players and fans.

“The past few days have been really special for all the legends involved in the parade and at today’s Golf Day. Being part of the Union’s 75th Anniversary celebrations have indeed been memorable as has the opporunity to get to know the team we support from afar on a social level. It was also nice trading stories about past experiences, disappointments and triumphs at the end of the day.”

The Vodacom Bulls Golf Day concluded with a prize-giving ceremony  and dinner at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club.
