Stephen Jones’ World Testimonial Tour
Stephen Jones isn’t banking on a third tour with the British & Irish Lions in 2013, but he will still be piling up the air miles next year as he embarks on his ‘World Testimonial Tour’.
Wales’ most capped player with 104 appearances for his country, Stephen continues to play at the highest level with London Wasps in the Aviva Premiership, LV=Cup and the Amlin Challenge Cup, but with the heady days of the Test arena probably now a thing of the past.
Not that Stephen has ever announced his retirement from international rugby and, should Warren Gatland come calling for either Wales or the Lions, he would probably get a very sympathetic hearing.
But, for the moment at least, Stephen’s twin goals for the next 12 months or more are to help Dai Young’s Wasps side win some silverware on the field and to turn his testimonial into a huge success off it.
“I’ve been given a great opportunity to say a huge ‘thank you’ to so many people over the next year and, at the same time, to help raise awareness and money for two great charities – the Welsh Charitable Trust, which does so much good work for injured players in Wales, and the Ray Gravell and Friends Charitable Trust,” said Stephen.
“It is fantastic to get an opportunity like this at my stage of my career and to get the chance to visit so many fantastic places. It is going to be a lot of fun and, I hope, will raise a lot of money for some great causes.
“I’ve also received huge support from former team mates at both club and country level and I’m already worried about what Keith Wood is going to say when he is given the microphone as chief guest at our Irish dinner in Cardiff. Their backing will make the year all the better.”
There was only one place the ‘World Tour’ could begin and that was a couple of Stephen Jones goal-kicks away from the Millennium Stadium, The Cardiff Hilton. On Thursday night (22 November, 2012) the current All Blacks coach Steve Hansen will be the guest speaker at the sold-out Launch Dinner.
“I really enjoyed working under Steve when he came to Wales and his influence on Welsh rugby was huge, especially around the 2003 World Cup. Our performances in that tournament against New Zealand and England paved the way for the Grand Slam in 2005,” said Stephen.
“It was very kind of him to find time in his schedule to take a night off and join us at the launch. He is currently in charge of the best team in the world and it looks as though they are going to stay at the top of the world rankings for some time to come.
“I played in the last 11 games for Wales against the All Blacks, as well as three times for the British & Irish Lions, so I know how tough a side they are to play against. Their skills are immense, they are always in great shape physically and they are as tough as teak mentally .
“Everyone always ask what it is like to play against the All Blacks and to face the Haka. I think some people think it is a scary proposition, but that’s not the case.
“It is always an honour and privilege to play against such a great rugby nation and I will miss not being a part of this very special weekend in Cardiff. The Welsh players will be massively motivated to do well and will be excited at the prospect of facing the best team in the world.
“They were that throughout my career in my mind, even if they didn’t have the World Cup on their mantelpiece until last year. Now they’ve regained it, it is going to be extremely tough to take it off them again!”
Steve Hansen will be the first of two great Kiwi coaches who will pay tribute to Stephen and his great career. The other is Warren Gatland, who will be guest speaker at a very special tribute night in Hong Kong ahead of the historic game between the British & Irish Lions and the Barbarians.
The Hong Kong ‘bash’ will come at the end of a hectic month of May, which also includes dinners in Oman, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar and Bahrain. Anyone wishing to join in the fun, and get involved in Stephen’s ‘World Tour’ should check out the events list on a special website www.smj10.com.
