STEVAL PUMAS – Sad start to ABSA Currie Cup campaign
The medical team of the Steval Pumas has released a report earlier today that three of the current Steval Pumas players are definitely out of contention for the 2015 Currie Cup campaign which will kick-off on 7 August.
According to the team physiotherapist, Luzahn Louw:
Drew van Coller (prop) – has a cervical fusion injury. He saw the orthopaedic surgeon and neuro-surgeon last week. But after four neck surgeries, his rugby career could be over at the age of 28. He will undergo surgery on 2 July.
Frikkie Spies (lock)-an ACL injury to his left knee. He will undergo reconstructive surgery at the end of the month which will leave him out of action for 6-8 months.
Eduan van der Walt (lock)– according to Dr. Kobus Hugo, team doctor of the Steval Pumas, Eduan’s recoverys is showing progress. At the end of last week he was able to hold a paper cup, bend his left arm 90 degrees, cross his legs, he stood up for a couple of seconds, he sits up for 20 minutes by himself
Wilmaure Louw (centre)– has a shoulder injury, but will be ready in the next couple of weeks
Jacques Momberg (hooker) has a knee injury, but will be match fit in three weeks.
MJ Mentz, head coach said:
“The loss of these players surely is of a big concern as they all played a massive part in our Vodacom Cup campaign this year. It’s clear that we will have a problem on lock and prop, but we can only approach players from other unions as soon as the window period opens in July. At this stage I can mention that a short list has been drafted with players we are interested in. We wish these injured players well with their recovery, and hope to see them back soon.”
