The warm-up match between the Steval Pumas and Cell C Sharks got off to a quick start on Friday afternoon at the Kings Park in Durban.

Soon after the start of the game, the Cell C Sharks were awarded a penalty try when the scrum was collapsed for which Marne Coetzee received a yellow card. This gave the Cell C Sharks a head start of 7 points.  Thereafter, the Cell C Sharks scored a try through the lock, Jean Droste. It was converted and the resultant score was 14 – 0.

Fortunately, JP Lewis scored a try which was converted. The Cell C Sharks responded by sending through a grubber kick from which S’bura Sithole was able to score.  By halftime, Odwa Ndungane had also scored and the score was now 28 – 7.

At the start of the second half, Devon Williams did a chip ‘n chase and scored in the corner. The conversion was missed setting the score at 28 – 12. Shortly after, Courtney Winnaar scored for the Cell C Sharks after a Ndungane run. Namibian scrumhalf Damian Stevens scored and the conversion resulted in 40 vs 12 to the Sharks.

Fifteen minutes into the second half, Devon Williams chipped and JP Lewis caught and beat his man on the outside to score in the corner. The try was converted by Kobus Marais. The final score was 50 – 19.

Steval Pumas coach Brent Janse van Rensburg said that the guys learned some hard lessons.

“The guys are learning lessons and learning them the hard way. We have to be consistent with what we do on the field, and we have to be accurate with the execution of the game plan. Today we were inconsistent, if we get that right we will be better for it, but everything is fixable. We just have to keep seeking solutions and I’m sure that with more time the guys will learn lessons from this,” said Janse van Rensburg.

Taking a glimpse at the good things of the game, Janse van Rensburg said: “We scored some tries when we were executing effectively. We were in the game and we looked good but unfortunately, the error rate turnovers were far too high,” said Janse van Rensburg.

Next up for the Steval Pumas is the start of the Super Sports Rugby Challenge 2017 series. The first game is at Loftus against the Blue Bulls on the 22nd April. Kick-off is at 3 pm.
