Steval Pumas up preparations with strategy session
The Steval Pumas upped their preparations for the Nashua Currie Cup in what was described as a highly productive strategy session on Wednesday, 27 July.
On the day, the players and management put their heads together for a recap of last season’s performances. They also went over their expectations, game plans and goals for the upcoming Currie Cup campaign, ahead of next Friday’s match against the Cell C Sharks at Mbombela Stadium.
“This was an opportunity for us to examine the good, bad and ugly of last season. We know our strengths – what works for us and what doesn’t – and what we need to improve on to be successful for this year’s Currie Cup,” said Steval Pumas head coach MJ Mentz.
There are still some intensive training sessions left for the Mpumalanga side before the game, but all the cogs are now in place for the players to dive headfirst into South Africa’s premier rugby tournament.
“All that’s left now is to kick them into gear. We had some highly productive outcomes to the meeting and we all feel really well prepared and ready to perform to the best of our ability,” Mentz said.
The Steval Pumas also built some ‘gees’ with a friendly but typically competitive action cricket contest at the Nelspruit Action Sports arena, before ending the day with a braai.
The refreshed and determined team is looking to improve on their sixth place finish in last year’s competition.
“We achieved some big wins last season against the likes of the Cell C Sharks, the Vodacom Bulls and the Toyota Free State Cheetahs, so we know we have the capabilities to perform at the highest level,” said Mentz.
The Steval Pumas Currie Cup journey kicks off at 19:20 next Friday, 5 August 2016.
