Steval Pumas week ahead and message from the coach
This week, the Steval Pumas will be mixing their intense training schedules with a variety of events around town, so Nelspruit locals should keep their eyes peeled for members of the squad.
On Wednesday evening, the team will be attending a show by the visiting Aussie Circus for some quality time with their families. On Friday morning between 7:15 and 7:45, be on the lookout for members of the squad at a robot somewhere in town, who will be handing out free tickets for the massive home game against the Vodacom Blue Bulls on Saturday. Other squad members are visiting several schools including Laerskool Nelspruit on Friday to connect with learners.
Speaking of schools, the Pumas Best School Supporter banner competition (sponsored by Crossing SUPERSPAR) has been met with great enthusiasm. Six schools have so far confirmed their entries, with the best banner at this weekend’s game being rewarded with a R10 000 cash prize for the winning school. The banners, along with hundreds of school pupils, will no doubt add to the exciting atmosphere at Mbombela Stadium.
The Steval Pumas recognise that they have not performed up to the expectations of supporters, or indeed themselves, during this year’s Currie Cup Premier Division. Head coach MJ Mentz would like to convey a message to the fans.
“We have had a rough start to the Currie Cup and want to apologise to our fans for not living up to expectations. We want to assure everyone that we are working extremely hard to reverse the mistakes we are making so that we can bounce back in the competition. While we know you have been understandably disappointed with our current track record of losses, I am confident and optimistic about the future because I see the fierce commitment of our players and coaching staff and am impressed by what I know is going on behind the scenes,” said Mentz.
Mentz added that the team needs the support of fans more than ever.
“We really appreciate each and every one of you and need you to be at the stadium for our next two home games. We would really appreciate hearing your voices for the whole 80 minutes and need your energy, passion and support. We want this win with everything we have. Hopefully the team selected to play on Saturday can give you something to be proud of,” Mentz said.
