Stick suspended for three weeks
Eastern Province Kings fullback Mzwandile Stick was on Thursday suspended for three weeks after he attended a Judicial Hearing following his red card offence during a Vodacom Cup match against the MTN Golden Lions.
Stick was red carded by referee Francois Groenewald in the 33rd minute of the match for a contravention of rule 10.4 (a), which prohibits a player from striking an opponent with an elbow, shoulder head or knee.
Assistant referee Mlungiseli Mdashe reported to Groenewald that the former SA Sevens captain head-butted MTN Lions fullback Marius Delport which resulted in a red card being issued by the referee.
Judicial Officer Andre Oosthuizen viewed different angles of the available video evidence of the incident and heard evidence from the assistant referee and Stick. He could not make a finding contrary to the refereeās decision. He mentioned that Mdashe is an experienced match official and had an unobstructed view of the incident.
As a result, Stick was suspended from all forms of rugby for three weeks commencing on 30 March 2011. The player has the right to appeal.
