Swanepoel leads Leopards against Griquas.
The Platinum Leopards will travel to Kimberley on Friday with a new captain. The Leopards number 8 Riaan Swanepoel takes over from flank Wilhelm Koch who will miss the match against Griquas due to a groin injury.
Swanepoel is not new to captaincy at all having captained most sides he has played for including the Leopards in the Vodacom Cup. The list of sides the hard working number 8 has captained include the mighty Grey-College of Bloemfontein as well as the Shimlas, the Univesity of the Free State’s first side.
Both the Leopards and Griquas desperately need a victory on Friday, even though for contrasting reasons. Griquas have lost ground on the top four in the last couple of weeks and the Leopards are still searching for their first victory in this year’s competition.
The Leopards will be without their player of the season so far in scrumhalf Michael Bondesio who is out with injury. His place is taken by under 21 scrumhalf Tiaan Dorfling. The men from Potch received some good news with Walter Venter back in the number 12 jumper and this will surely boost their midfield.
Griquas should be considered favourites for this game and on their home ground they will expect nothing less than 5 points, but as the Leopards showed at stages this season they can play some great rugby. Hopefully for them, with Swanepoel leading from the front like he usually does, they can string it together for 80 minutes.
The match kicks off at 19:oo on Friday night and should be a very entertaining fixture.
