Teams settled ahead of Emirates Airline SA Sevens
The sixteen teams that will be competing in this weekend’s Emirates Airline SA Sevens tournament have settled in after they arrived in George yesterday on two separate flights from Dubai via Cape Town.
Most sides took it easy today after arriving late in George on Sunday evening. The players spent most of the day with recovery sessions and will start their on-field training at facilities in George from tomorrow. The Emirates Airline SA Sevens tournament is the second stop on the eight-tournament HSBC Sevens World Series circuit and is the only tournament hosted on the African continent.
There are a number of legacy programmes that will keep the international teams busy in George during the week. Players of the competing nations will join eight local schools at a Tag Rugby clinic which takes place at the Rosemore Sports Fields at 14h00 on Tuesday. Springbok fullback Zane Kirchner will open a Tag Rugby Tournament which will run during the course of the week with the final of this competition expected to take place as a curtain raiser in preparation of Saturday’s games at Outeniqua Park.
“I am happy to report that all sixteen teams competing in this year’s Emirates Airline SA Sevens tournament safely arrived last night and have nicely settled in George,” said Tournament Director Steven Roos.
“This year, we’ve accommodated teams at the Protea Hotel King George and Fancourt facilities. As preparation begins ahead of Friday’s start to the tournament, teams will be involved in a number of social and rugby initiatives that has been lined up for the week. We’ve got our Absa Insure International Captains signing session tomorrow, and then teams will take time out of their schedules and attend a TAG Rugby coaching clinic with the local community of George.
“An activation that also traditionally attracts local interest is the Sasol Springbok Sevens signing session which will be taking place on Wednesday.”
Some of the activations that have been lined up for Tuesday include the following:
- Bob’s for Good Handover by the Springbok Sevens team
- Absa Insure International Captain’s Signing session
- SARU & HSBC Tag Rugby coaching clinic
- City of George Mayoral function
