Thrilling finish to Women’s Interprovincial pool rounds
The pool stages of the SA Rugby Women’s Interprovincial Competition will come to an exhilarating end this weekend, with Western Province, the Blue Bulls and KwaZulu-Natal still in the hunt to face Border in the A Section final, while Free State needs only one log point to book their final berth in the B Section.
The clash between WP and the Blue Bulls, in Cape Town, is probably the pick of the action in the A Section this weekend. The winner is expected to progress to the final, but KwaZulu-Natal still has a mathematical chance to make it and will go all out when they host SWD in Durban. In the final match, table-topping Border will line up against Eastern Province in East London.
Border, the defending champions in the A Section, are in pole position on the log to secure a home final with 15 points after three matches and a favourable points difference of 110 points. If the women from East London achieve this, it would mark their fourth consecutive home final.
Western Province and the Blue Bulls, meanwhile, trail Border with 13 and 11 log points respectively going into their clash on Saturday, with the winner set to advance to the final.
However, KwaZulu-Natal still have a mathematical chance of securing a final berth should the Blue Bulls and Western Province register a draw and the women from Durban secure a big win against SWD, who are still looking for their first win of the season.
Adding spice to the weekend’s action, should Western Province or the Blue Bulls win their match, they could still secure a home final if Border goes down against Eastern Province.
The B Section final will be played as a curtain-raiser to the A Section final, which is scheduled for Saturday, 17 September.
In the B Section, meanwhile, Free State will meet the Griffons in Bloemfontein, while Boland and Griquas go head-to-head in Wellington, the Valke take on the Leopards in Kempton Park, and the Golden Lions face the Pumas in Johannesburg.
The Golden Lions are already guaranteed of a place in the final, following victories in all three of their matches up to now. The women from the Free State are in a comfortable position to advance to the final as they are five log points ahead of Griquas and Boland with a clash lined up against the Griffons, who have yet to win a match this season. One log point will guarantee them a final berth if even if Griquas or Boland register a bonus-point victory in their clash.
