- Exciting finish to Women’s Youth Training Centre Women’s Day tournaments
Western Province on Saturday earned the bragging rights of handing Border their first defeat in three seasons in the SA Rugby Women’s Interprovincial Tournament in a thrilling third round in the competition.
Western Province’s U18 team, meanwhile, also took top honours in the South Section of the SA Rugby Youth Training Centre (YTC) Women’s Day tournament PW Botha High School in George, while Border won the U16 final.
The Limpopo Blue Bulls U18 team and Blue Bulls U16 team, meanwhile, won the North Section of the tournaments respectively at the Eersterust Rugby Club in Pretoria.
In the A Section of the Women’s Interprovincial Tournament Western Province edged Border 7-5 in East London to end the home team’s winning run dating back to August 2013, while the Blue Bulls defeated SWD 37-3 in George and KwaZulu-Natal secured a 26-10 win against Eastern Province in Durban.
In the B Section defending champions, Free State, thumped Boland 62-12 in Wellington and Griquas beat the Griffons 58-17 in Namaqualand to kick off their seasons on a winning note.
In the other B Section matches, the Golden Lions continued their solid form to defeat the Valke 34-17 in Johannesburg, while the Limpopo Blue Bulls and Leopards played to a 29-29 draw in Polokwane.
In East London, the clash between Border and Western Province was hard-fought as both teams threw everything at one another on attack and defence. Both sides crossed the tryline in the first half with Springbok Women’s lock Celeste Adonis touching down for Western Province, with a successful conversion by Kirsten Conrad, while Eloise Webb scored for Border. But those proved to be the only points of the match as the teams fought until the end.
Interestingly Western Province were the last team to defeat Border, with the Cape side winning 15-0 in Cape Town back in 2013, which was the last time Border lost a match.
KwaZulu-Natal delivered a strong second half showing in their clash against Eastern Province for their 26-10 victory. The teams were tied at 5-5 at the break, but the home team hit their straps after play resumed and used their point-scoring chances well.
The Blue Bulls outscored SWD seven tries to none for their 37-3 victory in George, while the hosts earned only a penalty for their efforts.
In the Youth Training Centre Women’s Day celebration tournaments, the Limpopo Blue Bulls edged the Blue Bulls 27-20 in the Under-18 Final in the North Section at the Eersterust Rugby Club, while Western Province pipped Border 3-0 in the South Section Final at PW Botha High School.
In the Under-16 age group the Blue Bulls pipped their sister union, the Limpopo Blue Bulls, 19-17 to win the North Section, and Border defeated Western Province 20-5 in the South Section Final.
The YTC tournaments kicked off on Saturday with the teams in both sections taking to the field. The winners on the opening day qualifying for the final in the U16 and U18 age groups in each section on Sunday.
