Top provincial Sevens players to display their skills in Saldanha
South Africa’s top provincial Sevens players will have the opportunity to show off their skills at the SARU Interprovincial Sevens tournament in Saldanha on Friday and Saturday when they compete for title as champions in the annual event.
The tournament, which will be hosted at West Coast School, features 34 teams of which 16 are men’s teams and 18 women’s teams, each divided into four pools.
The teams’ results on the opening day will determine which sides advance to Cup and Plate sections of the competition on Saturday.
The participating teams and spectators will also be in for a treat as the Springbok Sevens and their female counterparts the Springbok Women’s Sevens will attend the tournament in support of the event and to offer guidance to the players and coaches.
The Leopards men’s side and Eastern Province women took top honours last year and will be among the favourites when they take to the field. But they are expected to face tough competition given the high quality of the opposition teams, as several teams feature top provincial and a few international players.
The men’s division includes former Springbok Sevens players Danwel Demas, Alshaun Bock and Baldwin McBean, while the women’s division features Springbok Women Denita Wentzel, Natasha Hofmeester and Nicolene Barendse.
Western Province will host the Leopards in the opening match in the women’s division at 09h00, while men’s defending champions the Leopards take on Limpopo in the opening game in the men’s division at 09h30.
Friday’s matches will conclude at 18h20.
