Manu Tuilagi could still play a part in England’s RBS 6 Nations campaign, the Leicester Tigers centre has confirmed.

The 22-year-old suffered his pectoral injury early in the season and as a result he was absent for England’s autumn campaign against Australia, Argentina and New Zealand.

Initially, it was thought Tuilagi’s injury would heal without surgery but after slow progress it was decided he would need to go under the knife, extending his spell on the sidelines.

It was feared that he would be out of action for the whole of the RBS 6 Nations but Tuilagi revealed that while he is not targeting a specific match for a comeback, he hopes to be back on the field in mid-February, raising the prospect of featuring in England’s final two matches against Wales and Italy.

“My body isn’t too bad. I feel fresh, I’m training, doing rehab, physio and massage every day, so hopefully I can be back playing in mid-February,” said Tuilagi.

“I just want to play, I just want to get back on the pitch. Hopefully I’ve not forgotten how to play rugby!

“I’m not naming a game when I will play again, I want to take my time, get my injury right and get my body right, then I’ll worry about playing. But I’m aiming to be back in mid-February.”
