Grey High (PE) & Noord-Kaap first time at Wildeklawer SuperSchools 2013
Two debutants at this year’s Wildeklawer SuperSchools
EIGHTEEN of South Africa’s top rugby schools will be in action next week at Maritzburg College in Pietermaritzburg at the annual Wildeklawer SuperSchools tournament. The fifth edition of the tournament will see Noord-Kaap of Kimberley and Grey Boys’ High School of Port Elizabeth participating for the first time. Noord-Kaap has been a feature in the top ten rankings of various websites the last couple of years.
Northerns will face EG Jansen on Thursday, 2 May in the first match of the 2013 tournament. Their second match will be against Boland Landbou. EG Jansen has been attending the inaugural tournament in 2009 and was on the winning side in two of their eight matches thus far against Framesby in 2010 and Louis Botha last year. Boland Landbou has also been attending the tournament from year one and boasts four victories in their eight matches. Two of their victories came against HTS Middelburg and one each against Diamantveld and Ben Vorster.
Grey Boys’ High School will face Diamantveld and Outeniqua in their two matches during the tournament. The match against the Kwaggas of Outeniqua promises to be an exciting encounter. The Kwaggas are one of the top school sides in South Africa this year. Their winger Duhan van der Merwe and centre Warrick Gelant have already represented the South African Schools’ side last year. Outeniqua and Waterkloof will be locking horns in the main match of the first day.
The hosts are celebrating their 150th anniversary and will face Paul Roos Gimnasium and Framesby in their two matches. The match against Framesby will be the main encounter on the Saturday. Maritzburg College attended the tournament for the first time last year at Diamantveld in Kimberley.
The only side with an unbeaten record at Wildeklawer SuperSchools, Grey College will play against Oakdale Landbou and Monument in their two match. The match between Grey and Oakdale Landbou will be the first between these two teams. Monnas on the other hand is one of the sides with the best record against Grey College.
Two invitations sides will also partake in the tournament. The Sharks Invitation XV will be put together by former Springbok coach Rudolph Straeuli, while the Wildeklawer XV will be put together from players from the Western Cape and Boland.
