Unilever Goes Green – in support of the Springboks
Unilever South Africa and The South African Rugby Union (SARU) today announced that Unilever has joined the Springbok sponsorship family as an Associate Sponsor to the Springbok team. The announcement was made at the Radisson Blu hotel in Johannesburg in the presence of Springbok and Unilever management.
With the signing of the agreement, Unilever’s Shield brand is now the “Official Deodorant of the Springboks”, while Vaseline is the “Official Skincare of the Springboks”.
“Unilever has been in South Africa for over 100 years, and we are proud to show our support for the Springboks” said Marijn van Tiggelen, Chairman, Unilever South Africa. “Through the Vaseline and the Shield brands, Unilever seeks to meet the grooming needs of men, and nowhere is the efficacy of a grooming product put to the test more, than on the sports field” added van Tiggelen. This sponsorship is also in line with Unilever’s target of doubling its business while reducing its environmental impact.
Mark Alexander, the SARU Deputy President, said the organisation was delighted to welcome such a household name to Springboks’ sponsorship portfolio. “Unilever is a household company name in South Africa and their agreement with SARU will give us access to an enormous footprint across the country. This year we have signed a few significant sponsorship agreements for the Springboks and the addition of an established company such as Unilever shows us the Springbok brand is very healthy.”
The signing of the agreement was celebrated by International Rugby Captain John Smit, and Unilever Chairman Marijn van Tiggelen planting an umzimbeet tree in the Unilever office gardens in Durban.
Unilever is committed to meeting the needs of its consumers. The company’s vision is to create a better future in which people can improve their quality of life without increasing their environmental footprint. To this end Unilever launched the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan in 2010. Unilever’s commitment to the environment is echoed by SARU.
