Vodacom Bulls beat spirited Waratahs
The Vodacom Bulls held out a spirited Waratahs side with 14 men to claim a 23-17 victory and take one step closer to a spot in the play-offs.
The first half was dominated by play in the middle of the field and a brace of penalties from both sides before the Bulls scored a try through Wynand Olivier just before half time to lead 13-6 at the break.
Shortly after the restart Bjorn Basson equalled Bryan Habana’s record of 9 Super Rugby tries in a season after Deon Stegmann turned over a ball in their won 22. The Waratahs then started their comeback through another Kurtley Beale penalty and then by scoring a try through replacement Afa Pakalani. The Waratahs were then reduced to 14 men after assistant referee Pro Legoete adjudged replacement prop Pat O’Connor to have head-butted a Bulls player. Craig Joubert showed him red and the Waratahs had to finish the game with 14 men. Morne Steyn and Kurtley Beale each added a further penalty.
Good defence and a crucial turnover by Wynand Oliver in the dying seconds released the pressure from the Waratahs and the Bulls just chipped it inot touch as the hooter sounded.
