Western Province Rugby Union president Thelo Wakefield has emerged as a candidate to become SA Rugby’s new vice president.

The South African Rugby Union (Saru) must elect a new president after Oregan Hoskins resigned from his post two weeks ago. Current vice president Mark Elexander is acting as interim president, but if he gets the job on a full-time basis, which seems likely at this stage, he will have to be replaced as vice president.

“I think I can make a contribution at national level and, with the help of the executive committee, would like to take South African rugby in the right direction,” Wakefield told Netwerk24.

“There are big challenges that I’m up for.”

The closing date for nominations for president and vice president of Saru is September 26. The election will be held on October 27. To be eligible to vote for, candidates must be a member of the executive committee of his union or serve on the board of the union’s business wing. He would also have had to serve in the position for at least a year.
