Western Province u16 beat the Free State Cheetahs u16 in Final game of 2012 Coca-Cola u16 Grant Khomo Week
Western Province came from behind to beat Free State 10-7 in the last game of the Coca-Cola under-16 Grant Khomo Week in Johannesburg on Thursday.
The win meant that Western Province were one of just two teams to finish the week unbeaten. They beat the Golden Lions in their opening encounter and the Blue Bulls in their second outing and become the unofficial champions of the tournament.
Free State led 7-0 at halftime and 7-3 for most of the second half before Province’s Michael Meyer scored a good individual try to put Province ahead with nine minutes to go.
Free State then threw everything into the attack and they came close to scoring on several occasions, including the final minute when they spilled the ball with the tryline at their mercy.
Free State’s try was scored by Charles Raath, converted by Julian Jordaan. Province’s other points came from the boot of Tiaan Swanepoel who kicked a penalty and a conversion.
Eastern Province were the other side to get three wins out of three.
They put in their best performance of the week in downing Boland 31-25 in the second last game of the day on the A field.
They outscored Boland by five tries to three in an entertaining encounter. Eigthman Luigi Van Jaarsveld scored two tries and kicked three conversions for EP. Sithembiso Metshe also scored two tries and Keanu Vers one.
Boland’s tries were scored by Fabio Afrika, Jurie Fick and Wilfred Bowers. Timothy Griffiths kicked two penalties and two conversions.
The Golden Lions finally got a win under their belts following two narrow defeats, beating the Blue Bulls 29-20.
They led 21-10 at the break, but the Blue Bulls came back strongly in the second half and the Lions were never quite comfortable. The Lions got a late penalty to make the game safe at 29-15, but the Bulls had the last say via a try in the final minute to close the gap.
The Bulls’ tries were scored by Mathokou Teffo (two) and Andre Oerson. Tristan Nel kicked a penalty and a conversion.
For the Lions, Denzil Hill, Jacobus Holtzhausen, Ryno Herbst and Ruan De Beer dotted down. Forrest Roos kicked a penalty and three conversions.
