WHITELEY BACK TO LEAD LIONS
Warren Whiteley will captain the Emirates Lions when they face the Cell C Sharks in Durban on Saturday and Malcolm Marx will run out in his 50th Vodacom Super Rugby match.
Whiteley returns to Super Rugby action after injury side-lined him in March this year. Also back from injury are Marx and Ross Cronjé while Courtnall Skosan should taste his first Super Rugby action of the year from the bench.
A Lions side brimming with experience has been selected for this big local derby which sees Springboks Aphiwe Dyantyi and Ruan Combrinck covering the wings, Franco Mostert with Marvin Orie at lock and a front-row of Dylan Smith, Marx and Ruan Dreyer.
While the Super Rugby match is the main attraction in Durban this weekend, the curtain raiser will draw just as much attention with the Xerox Golden Lions and Sharks XV facing off in the SuperSport Rugby Challenge quarter-final.
The Lions Rugby Company is excited about the wealth of talent coming through its ranks as four youngsters that represented South Africa at the World Under 20 championships in France earlier in the year have been included in their side for this encounter. Wandisile Similane, the SA U/20 vice-captain, Tyrone Green, Manuel Rass and Gianni Lombard will all start against the Sharks XV while PJ Steenkamp will warm the bench.
The Supersport Rugby Challenge quarter-final kicks off at 14:15 and the Vodacom Super Rugby game at 17:15.
