The Western Province Girls Under-18 and Under-16 teams on Monday took top honours in the North Section of SARU’s Youth Training Centre Women’s Day celebrations, while the Border Under-18 team won the South Section.

In the South Section Under-16 tournament Eastern Province were crowned the champions against Border on points difference after the teams played to a 5-5 draw in the final.

The South African Rugby Union celebrated Women’s Day this past weekend by demonstrating their passion for rugby with two special tournaments featuring a new generation of Under-16 and Under-18 female players, sponsored by the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.

Teams from six SARU-run Women’s Youth Rugby Training Centres from across the country competed in North and South Sections, with three Under-16 and three Under-18 teams participating in each tournament.

The Western Province Under-18 team were in fine form from the outset as they registered an emphatic 88-0 victory against the Limpopo Blue Bulls and backed this up with a 67-7 victory against the Blue Bulls in the pool rounds at Hoërskool Warmbad in Bela-Bela. The Pretoria side, meanwhile, also came out tops against the Limpopo side as they worked their way to a convincing 56-0 victory. These results booked a north-south final in the Under-18 competition.

Western Province wasted no time making their presence felt in the final and they earned the rewards with a memorable 42-0 victory.

The Western Province Under-16 team, meanwhile, opened up their tournament with a 19-0 victory, but stumbled against the Limpopo Blue Bulls as they suffered a narrow 14-10 defeat. The Blue Bulls, meanwhile, bounced back from their defeat with a convincing 34-14 victory against the Limpopo side to book their place in the final on Monday against the Cape side.

Western Province, however, completely dominated the final as they cruised to a 67-5 victory against the Blue Bulls to take the title.

In the South Section, hosted at Hoërskool Grens in East London, the Border Under-18 team worked their way into the final against Eastern Province compliments of 34-0 victory against their Eastern Cape rivals and a 10-0 victory against KwaZulu-Natal. Eastern Province, meanwhile, also got the better of KwaZulu-Natal as they secured a 17-0 victory.

Border, however, dominated the final as they capitalised on their point-scoring chances, which earned them a 27-10 victory.

The South Section Under-16 competition proved to be a humdinger as Border and Eastern Province both stamped their authority. Border registered a 27-0 victory against KwaZulu-Natal in their opening pool game, but they managed to defeat the Port Elizabeth side only 5-0. In the other pool match Eastern Province thumped KwaZulu-Natal 37-0.

The final, however, was a tense affair as both teams threw everything at one another, which resulted in the teams playing a 5-5 draw. With a favourable points’ difference in the competition favouring Eastern Province, however, the Port Elizabeth team took the honours.
