WP, Leopards unbeaten at U16 Girls Week
Western Province on Friday held their nerve in a nail-biting clash against Border on the final day of the SARU Girls Under-16 Week to emerge as 12-10 victors and one of only two unbeaten teams as the tournament concluded at CJ Langenhoven Gymnasium in Oudtshoorn.
The Cape side had a similarly successful run in last year’s competition in Durban, where they also completed the women’s Youth Week as one of two unbeaten sides.
Western Province registered a convincing 26-0 victory against the Limpopo Blue Bulls in their opening match on Monday and backed it up with an emphatic 48-0 victory against the Free State on Wednesday.
These impressive performances earned them a place in the main match of the tournament against Border, who were also unbeaten going into Friday’s final round.
The clash was close as the teams threw everything at one another for the duration of the match, but the two- point difference on the scoreboard ultimately handed the Cape side the top honours.
The Leopards also maintained their unbeaten run in the tournament, although the Potchefstroom side played to a 12-12 draw against SWD.
Border CD, meanwhile, suffered their first defeat on the final day against the dominant Limpopo Blue Bulls, who secured a 19-5 victory to finish the tournament on a positive note.
The final day also proved good for the Golden Lions, who defeated the Griffons 19-0 for their first and only victory in the tournament.
