WP make strong statement in Women’s Interprovincials
Defending SA Rugby Women’s Interprovincial champions, Western Province, made a strong statement in the opening round of the A Section of the tournament as they thumped the Blue Bulls 77-3 in Cape Town on Saturday to show that they could be a force to be reckoned with once again.
In the other games, 2017 runners up, Border, defeated their neighbours, Eastern Province, 22-10, and KwaZulu-Natal registered a 20-3 victory against the Free State.
Western Province was in sublime form on attack and defence at the City Park Stadium in Athlone, with the side making good use of their point-scoring chances, while they did well to shut out the opposition on defence. This saw the Blue Bulls having to settle for a penalty goal for their efforts.
Border faced a strong challenge from Eastern Province at the BCM Stadium in East London, as both sides tried hard to make their presence felt. Border’s superior attack and defence, however, allowed them to seal the victory.
Kwa-Zulu Natal also delivered a solid attacking display against Free State, which they supported with a quality defensive effort in front of their home crowd at Jonsson Kings Park in Durban, for their encouraging 20-3 victory.
The teams will return to the field in two weeks for the second round of the competition.
SA Rugby Women’s Interprovincial round one results (Saturday, 21 July):
KZN 20-3 Free State (Jonsson Kings Park 2, Durban)
Western Province 77-3 Blue Bulls (City Park, Cape Town)
Border 22-10 Eastern Province (BCM Stadium, East London)
