WESTERN Province U21 produced a dominant second half display to outplay their EP Kings counterparts 44-13 in the Absa U21 provincial competition at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday (July 25).
EP drew first blood when flyhalf Simon Bolze kicked a penalty and, after his opposite number Brandon Thomson levelled matters, the Kings went ahead 8-3 with a fine try by fullback Malcolm Jaer.
Big English centre Sam Bedlow created an opening and the elusive Jaer needed no encouragement as he shot through to take the final pass.
However, WP hit back when lock Johannes Momsen charged down a kick near the EP line and then dived onto the ball, with his momentum taking him over in the slippery conditions to level the scores.
WP went ahead with a fine break in midfield by Thomson for centre Ryan Oosthuizen to finish off in the lefthand corner as the visitors took a 13-8 lead into the break.
In the second half, with the WP pack dominant, the Western Cape side took control and scored three more tries for a convincing victory.
EP Kings scored their only points of the half in the 74th minute when wing Somila Jho shot over for their second try.
The point-scorers were:
WP 44: tries by Johannes Momsen, Ryan Oosthuizen, Leolin Zass, Christo van der Merwe, Jason Worrall and a penalty try; two penalties and four conversions by Thomson.
EP 13: tries by Malcolm Jaer, Somila Jho; a penalty by Simon Bolze.
