Western Province on Friday took top honours at the Sub-Union South tournament in Kimberley after a hard-fought final against the KZN Wildebeest, which denied the opposition back-to-back titles.

Eastern Province won the Plate Final after beating Griquas 46-21, while Boland finished the tournament in third place after defeating SWD 46-39.

Border, meanwhile, thumped Free State 36-12 in the seventh and eighth-place playoff.

The battle between Western Province and defending champions, the KZN Wildebeest, was tight as both teams tried hard to stamp their authority on attack. But the Cape side made better use of their point-scoring chances, which allowed them to secure the 34-25 victory.

Eastern Province, meanwhile, dominated from the outset in the Plate Final against Griquas and built up an encouraging 25-14 halftime lead. They maintained this fine form in the second half to accumulate an impressive eight tries, while Griquas crossed the tryline only three times.

Boland also delivered a solid performance for their 46-39 victory against SWD, with the team also scoring eight tries. SWD, however, fought hard to claw their way back into the match in the second half and this paid off as they recovered from a 22-6 deficit at the break to go down by only seven points.

In the opening clash of the day Border outscored the Free State five tries to two for their 36-12 victory.
