Western Province confirmed their reputation as the top team at the Coca-Cola Under-16 Grant Khomo Week when they came from behind to beat Free State 10-7 in the final match of the tournament, played this year at the University of Johannesburg.

The Cape side picked up their third straight win in a main match following a nail-biting 21-19 victory against hosts the Lions on Monday and a comfortable 36-5 win over the Blue Bulls on Tuesday.

There were also wins on the final day’s play for Griquas, Border, Namibia, Limpopo, Lions XV, KZN, EP, SWD and the Lions.

Apart from WP, the only other side to remain unbeaten throughout were Eastern Province, while nine of the 20 teams won two of their three matches.

In the unofficial final, Free State scrumhalf Charles Raath crossed for a try in the 23rd minute, converted by centre Julian Jordaan, to give his side a 7-0 lead at the break.

WP fullback Tiaan Swanepoel, one of the players of the tournament, replied with a penalty six minutes into the second half, before flanker Michael Meyer put the Cape side ahead with just over 10 minutes remaining with a try. Swanepoel added the extra points to make it 10-8.

There were a number of other notable performances on Thursday, none more so than Lions XV flyhalf Rashard Fuller’s 35 points (3 tries, 10 conversions) scored in his side’s 75-3 win over Border Country Districts.
