Newly appointed Auckland ITM Cup coach Paul Feeney has announced former Auckland stalwart, Xavier Rush, as his assistant coach for the upcoming ITM Cup season.

Rush played 80 games for Auckland between 1997 and 2004, captaining the side to three National Provincial Championships and Ranfurly Shield success.

After eight seasons playing for the Cardiff Blues, Rush transitioned straight to coaching and was the defence coach for the club until the start of the current northern hemisphere season.

“It is very exciting to be coming back home and working with Auckland Rugby,” said Rush.

“I have many fond memories of my time in the blue and white jersey and can’t wait to get stuck in as a part of this coaching team.”

The eight-Test All Black will begin his coaching duties alongside Feeney and scrum coach Nick White in July.

“Auckland is delighted to have one of our most popular players on board in a coaching capacity,” said Feeney.

“Xavier is well-respected amongst the playing group and beyond the obvious leadership and professionalism he will bring, will be the fresh ideas and perspective he has following his time in Europe.”
